A cruise passenger on a Princess Cruises ship passed away in an apparent attempt to jump off the ship.
The incident occurred over the weekend while Sky Princess was headed back to home.
A passenger posted on a Facebook group, "Tragic incident onboard the Sky Princess this afternoon as we're making our way back to Port Everglades. A medical situation was called around 3pm today. Around 6pm, the Captain announced that a female passenger had attempted to jump from the ship."
"Despite the crew's best efforts, she succumbed to her injuries," the person wrote in the post.
Princess Cruises confirmed the report to Cruise Radio, "Princess Cruises is deeply saddened to confirm the passing of a 48-year-old American female guest who attempted to jump overboard earlier today aboard Sky Princess. The guest fell to a lower deck, where she was promptly rescued. Shipboard personnel immediately provided emergency medical care, but despite their best efforts, she could not be revived."
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the guest’s family and friends during this profoundly difficult time. Grief support services are being offered to guests and crew members affected by this event."
The woman has not been identified.
Sky Princess is a fairly new cruise ship, having launched in 2019. She has a passenger capacity of 3,660 guests.
The ship was on a 7-night Caribbean cruise that visited Cozumel, Mexico; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; and the line's private island of Princess Cays.
A user on the Princess Cruises subreddit claims to be the person's cousin and posted, "I wasn’t on the ship but she was my cousin. I just want to say I appreciate everyone’s thoughts and concerns, and overall sensitivity to what happened. I won’t go into detail as it is a very personal situation, but I will say she was really looking forward to this cruise as it was especially important for her mother. "
"Thank you all again for being so kind and understanding, my aunt would also really appreciate that."
"Devastated for the families and friends"
News of the incident spread quickly after the ship's Captain made the announcement.
On Reddit, many shared their shock at what happened.
elgr33ko wrote, "I'm also on the ship and it sounds like the person may have fallen on deck 7 because we heard an announcement this afternoon saying all medical personnel proceed to deck 7 starboard immediately."
avronb added, "I was in the Princess theater and the performance was stopped for the medical emergency. It feels heavy to know this happened."
