"This is not a trip I would have taken": Alaska cruise finally departs after propulsion issues force major itinerary changes

One cruise ship remained stuck in port while undergoing urgent propulsion repairs, finally setting sail more than 24 hours later than planned.

Holland America Line's Zaandam was supposed to depart on an epic seven-night Alaska cruise on June 10, visiting bucket list destinations like Endicott Arm, Juneau, Skagway, and Glacier Bay.

Cruise disrupted by propulsion issue; Alaska sailing delayed and large refunds offered

Holland America Line's Zaandam will depart from Vancouver, Canada, later than planned due to propulsion issues requiring urgent repairs. 

Guests aboard the June 10 voyage to Alaska were given the unfortunate news that their departure would be delayed by one day because of a propulsion issue that's forcing the 26-year-old ship to sail at slower-than-normal speeds.

Another cruise line suddenly raises the daily gratuity charges

Another cruise line is suddenly increasing gratuities for passengers. 

Effective June 1, 2026, Holland America Line (HAL) will raise the daily gratuity rate by $1 per day, bringing the new rate for standard cabins to $18.00 per person, up from $17.00, and suites to $20.00 per person, up from $19.00.

The 2026 Alaska cruise season is right around the corner. Travelers are months away from the excitement of everything The Last Frontier offers, from local seafood to stunning views and awe-inspiring wildlife sightings. However, one cruise line informed passengers that all excursions in one popular port were canceled due to "operational considerations."

Suspected norovirus outbreak hits 76 passengers on two-week cruise

Nearly 80 people fell ill during a suspected cruise ship norovirus outbreak aboard a two-week sailing from Japan to Hong Kong. 

According to Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection (CHP), 65 passengers and 11 crew members aboard Holland America Line's Westerdam cruise ship were reported ill during the February 15, 2026, voyage.

Holland America Line's ms Zuiderdam was supposed to call at Puerto Vallarta on Monday, February 23, 2026. However, the cruise line's security team decided to cancel the planned visit to prioritize the safety of passengers and crew members. 

Over 80 passengers and crew sick on cruise ship as highly contagious norovirus variant spreads

More than 80 people got sick due to a norovirus outbreak during a voyage on Holland America Line's Rotterdam cruise ship. 

Among the 2,593 guests aboard the ship, 81 reported being ill during a cruise that ended on January 9, 2026, along with eight crew members, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 

Search called off for passenger who "intentionally" went overboard from Holland America cruise ship

Search efforts for a missing passenger who went overboard from Holland America's Nieuw Statendam on New Year's Day have been suspended. 

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) confirmed on X that the search for the 77-year-old woman had been called off, noting that crews covered approximately 690 square miles over the course of about eight hours.

Holland America Line's fleet isn't known for massive mega-ships with endless onboard amenities. Instead, the line focuses on modest builds that can transport guests to a wide variety of destinations around the world while prioritizing fine dining, cultural programming, and personalized service.

The cruise line was founded over 150 years ago in 1873 in Rotterdam as a shipping and passenger line. In 1989, it was purchased by Carnival Corporation, effectively making it a United States-owned cruise line. 

Strong winds disrupt thousands as multiple cruise ships break free from docks

Within the past week, three cruise ships have broken free from their secured moorings in port, disrupting thousands of passengers. 

The chaos started with Norwegian Epic on Friday, May 30. While visiting Catania, Sicily, a powerful wind gust struck the vessel's port side around 1:00pm. Consequently, the mooring lines began snapping one at a time.
