A crew member died after going overboard from a cruise ship in the Caribbean on Monday morning.

A spokesperson for Princess Cruises confirmed that a crew member working aboard the Regal Princess went overboard near Cancun, Mexico.

As per maritime protocol, the Royal Class vessel immediately initiated its emergency response and began a search operation with maritime authorities.

The seven-night cruise departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on July 11, 2026, with plans to visit Mexico, Belize, and Honduras.

However, less than two days into the weeklong voyage, the voyage was interrupted as the ship's crew responded to an overboard emergency around 5:30 a.m.

"Princess Cruises is responding to a situation involving a crew member aboard Regal Princess in waters off the coast of Cancun," a spokesperson for Princess Cruises told CBS News Miami

CruiseMapper data confirms that the Regal Princess steered from its path near the location of the incident, consistent with standard overboard search procedures.

The ship was en route to Cozumel, Mexico, when the crew member went overboard, with an estimated arrival time around 7:00 a.m. local time.

However, CruiseMapper shows that Regal Princess skipped its scheduled visit and remained off the Mexican coast, indicating the vessel's port day was affected as the crew and authorities focus on the ongoing search operation.

One passenger, Pam Holland Boyd, shared on Facebook that their visit to Cozumel was cancelled so they could circle the waters off the Yucatán Peninsula while search efforts continue in coordination with the Mexican Coast Guard.

Unfortunately, the cruise line later confirmed to KHOU 11 that the crew member died but did not release additional information about the crew member or the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the crew's family and friends during this difficult time," Princess Cruises said in a statement to KHOU 11

Passengers have taken to social media to explain what's going on aboard the 142,229 gross-ton vessel and send positive thoughts to their crew member's family.

"Today was supposed to be a fun day at the beach in Cozumel but is instead an unexpected day at sea. Sadly, we were woken up this morning to the news that a crew member is missing. They are conducting search and rescue efforts but they have reason to believe the person jumped overboard," Blue Sky Adventures shared on Facebook

"That was around 5:30 am. It's been 5 hours and no luck, despite an immediately response of our crew and the help of nearby Carnival Jubilee and the Mexico Coast Guard authorities. While it's sad that our trip is interrupted, it's much sadder that someone got to such a low point that they felt this was the only way out. If that's you, please talk to someone and get the help you need."

What is most likely to cause someone to fall overboard?

Although not extremely common, it is not unheard of for people to go overboard for a cruise ship. Even if you have never witnessed a frightening incident firsthand, you've likely seen news headlines about similar accidents.

The crew member from Regal Princess is the latest such case. The incident prompted an immediate search and rescue effort by the ship's crew and maritime authorities.

But what else happens when someone goes overboard from a cruise ship? As soon as crew members realize that someone has gone overboard, they will broadcast a secret emergency code. The exact terminology varies by cruise line, but it could be something like "Mr. Mob" or "Oscar, Oscar, Oscar."

This signal lets other crew members know what's going on and activate search and rescue protocols without freaking out other guests.

These are highly coordinated endeavors and involve many resources. In this case, Princess Cruises contacted maritime authorities for assistance.

Regardless of whether or not the person is successfully rescued, an investigation will be launched to determine why they went overboard.

According to a 2020 report from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), there were 212 man-overboard incidents reported between 2009 and 2019. Unfortunately, only 48 of those individuals were successfully rescued.

Additionally, most cruise overboard incidents happen as a result of intentional acts, unsafe behavior, or excessive alcohol consumption.
