Royal Caribbean cruiser falls off pier at private island, quickly rescued

Overboard Incident, CocoCay

Despite its name, not everyone has a "perfect" day at Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay.

That was especially true this weekend, when one passenger fell off the pier and into the ocean while visiting the private island destination. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 11, and prompted an immediate response from crew members as they worked to rescue the guest.

Although it hasn't been confirmed, some reports indicate that this wasn't a drunken mistake. Rather, the elderly passenger was on a mobility scooter that suddenly malfunctioned.

Due to his age and mobility limitations, he was unable to get off the scooter before it plunged into the ocean between the cruise dock and Adventure of the Seas around 1:25 p.m. At that point, the secret code word "Oscar, Oscar, Oscar" was broadcast, indicating a man-overboard incident.

One passenger aboard Wonder of the Seas captured the dramatic rescue as crew members quickly responded to the emergency, even filming one security officer jumping in the water. Others stayed on the pier, gathering life rings and other rescue equipment.

"A man fell into the water between the port and one of the cruise ships #perfectdaycococay #royalcaribbeaninternationalcruise Brave men and women went to the rescue, going into the water to try and save the man. So emotional, watch until the end," shared @dogsfamily_love on TikTok.

Over two dozen crew members were on scene helping rescue the passenger, including senior officers, medical staff, and maintenance workers.

Another video shared on @dogsfamily_love's profile shows that they were eventually rescued, being pulled from the ocean on a spine board stretcher before being moved to another stretcher for easier transport.

Then, he was covered with blankets and rushed on Wonder of the Seas to receive further medical treatment.

According to CruiseMapper, Wonder of the Seas was on a three-night cruise to CocoCay and Nassau from Miami, returning to Florida on Monday, July 13.

Adventure of the Seas, the other ship in port, was visiting CocoCay as its first stop on an eight-night Caribbean cruise to The Bahamas,  the Dominican Republic, Aruba, and Curaçao. She's expected to return to Port Canaveral, Florida, on July 18.
