Royal Caribbean offers guests 100% refund and future credit if they cancel at the last minute

Freedom of the Seas docked in Nassau

Passengers on an upcoming sailing aboard Freedom of the Seas were asked to skip their upcoming Bahamian cruise. In return, the cruise line offered compensation for those willing to cancel just days before embarkation.

According to an email shared with Cruise Blog, the offer was targeted at those with flexible plans who could easily adjust their vacation schedules, thus allowing Royal Caribbean to free up staterooms on the 156,271 gross-ton ship.

"Ahead of our Freedom of the Seas July 2, 2026, sailing, we are looking to see if you and your travel party have flexible arrangements," the email reads.

Continuing on, "If your plans are set in stone, please mark this email as 'Read' , and gear up for your upcoming adventure - although, there are some pretty sweet options below."

Although the email doesn't explain why they're offering cruisers the generous incentives to change their plans, it has historically been used as a tactic to open up cabins on overbooked sailings.

While oversold cruises are not as common as oversold flights, they do happen. As a result, cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, try to quickly solve the situation with refunds, future travel credits, and other rebooking options.

In this case, guests on Freedom of the Seas' July 2 sailing could either disregard the email, transfer to another sailing aboard the same ship and receive a full refund, or cancel their booking and receive a full refund plus a 100% FCC.

"Please note, this special offer is for a limited-time and subject to availability. Completing the survey does not guarantee you will be selected for the offer. If you're happy to be excluded from the special offer, please disregard this email," the communication says.

The four-night sailing departing from Miami will visit Nassau, Bahamas, and Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's award-winning private island.

Option 1: Transfer to one of the listed cruises and get a full cruise fare refund

The first option lets flexible passengers move to another four-night Bahamian cruise on Freedom of the Seas.

According to the email, the only available sailing departs Miami on July 16, also calling at Perfect Day at CocoCay and Nassau.

The email also states that passengers will receive a complimentary transfer to the sailing in a similar category to what was previously booked.

However, those who are willing to move to a lower category (like from a balcony to an ocean-view cabin) will also receive a $300 non-refundable onboard credit to be used during their voyage.

Finally, Royal Caribbean will reimburse passengers for any non-refundable, pre-purchased travel expenses, like hotels and airfare.

Option 2: Cancel and receive a 100% refund plus a 100% FCC

If the alternative cruise does not work, passengers can choose to cancel their sailing in exchange for a full refund, along with a 100% FCC to put toward any Royal Caribbean sailing they want.

Those who go with this option can expect to get the refund to the original form of payment within fourteen business days. That said, refund times vary depending on the financial institution.
