US travel advisory issued for popular Caribbean cruise port

Grand Turk Cruise Port

Cruisers heading to Turks & Caicos will want to exercise more caution than usual.

The U.S. State Department updated its travel advisory for the islands to a Level 2, warning travelers about safety concerns due to high crime levels.

According to the State Department's website, most crime occurs in Providenciales. Thankfully, the popular Grand Turk cruise port is located on a separate island on the opposite side of the Turks and Caicos Islands archipelago.

That said, it's important to keep your wits about you, regardless of whether you're in Providenciales on a land-based vacation or simply spending the day in Grand Turk.

There have been reports of sexual assaults in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and petty crime is common, especially in popular tourist locations. Most crimes affecting visitors are crimes of opportunity, such as purse snatching and pickpocketing, and tourists may encounter aggressive vendors.

The police may have limited resources to investigate crimes. As such, the U.S. Embassy Nassau in The Bahamas will assist victims of crime in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Among those lines, the most frequent visitors to Grand Turk are those owned by Carnival Corporation & plc, including Carnival, Princess, and Holland America Line.

For example, Princess is expected to call at Grand Turk seven times in October, followed by Carnival with four visits, and Holland America stopping one time.

Virgin Voyages, though not owned by Carnival, is another common visitor. In October, the adults-only line plans to make three calls to the Grand Turk cruise port aboard ships like Resilient Lady and Scarlet Lady.

FBI Warning

In June, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Houston issued a warning, reminding travelers to stay safe while at sea.

“As summer vacations begin, the FBI reminds you that if you have been a victim of assault with serious bodily injury, kidnapping, [or] sexual assault aboard a cruise ship, report it to security staff immediately," reads the FBI's post on X and Facebook

"If you are no longer on the cruise, contact your local police and the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324) or tips.fbi.gov."
