I've been on over 30 cruises, and my favorite cruise port is the most underrated stop in the Caribbean — here's why

Grand Turk

Today, cruise line private islands are all the rage, with companies investing millions into exclusive, resort-style destinations. Although I love visiting Perfect Day at CocoCay or Celebration Key, one of my favorite Caribbean cruise ports is one that often gets overlooked because it isn't a private destination.

Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos, is an easily accessible beach-front cruise port that's nestled along 18 acres of landscaped grounds, complete with a complimentary beach, massive pool, and more.

While the cruise port was developed by Carnival Corporation & plc. in 2006, it's since been opened to other cruise lines, including Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International.

After three visits to the Grand Turk cruise port, I can confidently say that it's one of my favorite destinations in the Caribbean — even if it lacks the same appeal that cruise line private islands have. Here's why it should be on everyone's must-visit list.

Easy, walk-off accessibility

Accessing Grand Turk's amenities is easy thanks to the port's layout. The short pier takes you into the heart of the action, just steps from the crystal clear waters and massive pool. This is a noticeable advantage compared to other Caribbean cruise ports that require shuttles or long transfers to reach the beach.

Overall, the cruise port isn't anything fancy and was designed for simplicity (and tourists). In that way, it's almost like any other port of call, ranging from Nassau to St. Thomas and Cozumel.

Where it differs, however, is the accessibility. Everything, from restaurants to beach rentals, restroom facilities, bars, and shops, is organized into an easy-to-navigate complex that gives it a private destination feel.

Doesn't feel like an isolated resort bubble

Margaritaville Grand Turk

Despite its convenient setup, Grand Turk doesn't feel like you’ve been dropped into a private resort. Instead, there's a solid balance of convenience and local flair that helps distinguish itself from ports like Celebration Key, CocoCay, and Great Stirrup Cay.

For example, while you can grab lunch at Margaritaville or a coffee from Starbucks, you're also a short walk away from less touristy, more local spots, such as the Beached Whale Restaurant. Here, you can grab conch fritters, seafood chowder, jerk chicken, grilled mahi mahi, and fried plantains.

It's just as easy to leave the cruise center and explore other parts of the island, whether through cruise line-sponsored excursions or individual exploration.

Either way, Grand Turk feels less of an extension of the onboard experience. However, you aren't forced to immediately start browsing available tours to make the most of your time ashore. Instead, it's easy to plan a low-key day within the port or hop on an island tram tour — whatever floats your boat, literally!

Solid amenities

Beach in Grand Turk

If you decide to stay within the Grand Turk Cruise Center, you must know what amenities are available, starting with the beautiful stretch of beach that's easily a highlight of the port.

This long stretch of white sand and crystal clear turquoise water is easily accessible from the cruise ship, making it one of the most popular spots ashore.

That said, one drawback of the beach is that there's limited complimentary seating available. As such, if you don't want to be stuck paying for a lounge chair or stretching out on your towel in the sand, you must get off the ship early to claim your spot.

Another thing to be aware of is that the ocean is a bit rocky in certain spots. It isn't terribly difficult to navigate, but it isn't powdery-soft, either.

This is important to keep in mind when choosing where to set up camp for the day, as the beach to the right of the pier (or left when you're facing the ships) gets less ideal for swimming the further you get from the main cruise center area.

If you aren't a beach person, no need to fear! The Grand Turk cruise port has an expansive and complimentary pool available for passengers, complete with a swim-up bar and FlowRider surf simulator.

The pool area tends to be livelier than the beach, with a DJ blasting tunes nearly all day. That said, drinks from the swim-up bar — or anywhere ashore — are not included and must be bought with a valid debit or credit card. Your cruise card won't work at the Margaritaville bar or restaurant, for example.
