Carnival introduces a new dining change to fix a frustrating meal problem

Carnival Cruise Dining Room

Less than one year after Carnival began testing a new express dinner service, the cruise line announced plans to expand it fleetwide.

Many cruisers don't want to feel like they're being held hostage for dinner when there's an exciting evening lineup of activities, from movies under the stars to dance parties, sing-alongs in the piano bar, and comedy shows.

Initially, the goal of the new service was to shorten dinner from 90 minutes to 45 minutes. However, according to a recent press release, the new Express Dining program now aims to serve passengers in parties of six or fewer in under an hour — which is still an impressive feat considering Carnival's ships have to turn out thousands of meals for its guests.

This change is an extension of Carnival's flexible Your Time Dining, which allows guests to dine when and with whom they choose. Carnival's Express Dining and flexible dining reflect a growing demand for convenience and personalization, moving away from the traditional formal, multi-course dinner where passengers dressed up, lingered, and ate at the same assigned table for their entire sailing.

Currently, the Express Dining service is available on 15 of Carnival's ships. The cruise line plans to expand the new dining program to the entire fleet by the end of May:

  • Carnival Jubilee
  • Carnival Celebration
  • Mardi Gras
  • Carnival Venezia
  • Carnival Firenze
  • Carnival Panorama
  • Carnival Horizon
  • Carnival Sunrise
  • Carnival Vista
  • Carnival Breeze
  • Carnival Radiance
  • Carnival Conquest
  • Carnival Dream
  • Carnival Glory
  • Carnival Freedom

The goal of Carnival's Express Dining is to cut the dining time without compromising the food quality or overall dining experience that cruisers have come to appreciate.

To accomplish that, the streamlined dinner service offers a reduced menu with a carefully selected range of appetizers, entrées, and desserts, including Carnival's famous chocolate melting cake

Each night, passengers have four complimentary appetizers and entrées to choose from, along with three included desserts, five extra-charge entrées, and one extra-charge dessert.

Express Dining is only available to Any Time diners. Those with the flexible dining option can opt in to the faster dinner service through Carnival's mobile HUB App. Additionally, the new multi-course dinner service will continue to accommodate special dietary requests.

"Our guests continue to tell us they value greater flexibility in how they spend their time on board, and Express Dining was designed with that in mind," said Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line.

"Our pilot program generated positive feedback from our guests. With this in mind, we are excited to expand Express Dining to offer them the same high-quality dishes and attentive service our dining rooms are known for, while giving guests the ability to use more of their time to enjoy all the other onboard fun."

Focus on offering dining flexibility across the fleet

Lido Marketplace

Last year, Carnival launched new buffet menus to make dining easier for busy cruisers. The Family Express lunch menus ensure that there's a quick and streamlined lunch option for those who may not want to wait in line for Guy's or browse the buffet's seemingly endless stations.

Instead, everything — from salads to entrées and desserts — is in one designated place in the Lido Marketplace. As such, it's easier to grab everything you want in a single trip without wasting time wandering around the different stations.

Options range from kid-approved favorites like chicken tenders, plain spaghetti pasta, and hot dogs to more sophisticated options, such as salmon croquettes, turkey escalopes, and chicken mirabella.

If that wasn't news enough, Carnival has begun testing its new dining room menus. Each evening, there will be a "Chef's Favorite Pick" section, highlighting the night's best appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Additionally, the "Carnival Crew Favorites" section will showcase special dishes that celebrate the global heritage of crew members from across the fleet, such as kung pao chicken, beef bourguignon, and lomo saltado.

"We are testing new menus...We'll put it all together; we'll find out what you like and perhaps what you want to see changed, but it is going to be a very, very big year for food," explained Heald in a three-minute Facebook video.

Carnival also overhauled its popular SeaDay Brunch menu, replacing favorites like the skillet cake, steak & eggs, 12-hour French toast, huevos rancheros, and 7-layer chocolate cake.
