Disney suddenly cancels cruise to nowhere because of propulsion problem

Disney Adventure, Port Canaveral

Disney's newest cruise ship experienced a propulsion issue, resulting in the sudden cancellation of a four-night cruise from Singapore.

Passengers booked on Disney Adventure's May 7th sailing were informed that their voyage was canceled because of technical issues — after they had already embarked.

"After embarking the cruise yesterday, we were informed by the captain that the cruise is having some technical issues and engineers... today at approx 2pm singapore time the [captain] announced that they are cancelling the adventure...and everyone would be getting 100% refund and 50% discount on their next sailing," one guest shared on Reddit

Passengers were instructed to wait until they received their official cancellation letter to disembark the ship, with some reports stating guests were on the ship as late as 11:00 p.m.

Disney Cruise Line arranged one-night complimentary hotel accommodations for stranded travelers, along with free transportation to the designated hotels, such as the JW Marriott, Fairmont, and Swissotel.

Additional compensation includes a 100% refund of the cruise fare and any unused services (like Wi-Fi packages), 50% off a future Disney cruise, free internet access, flight change fee reimbursements, and up to $500 per stateroom for other incidentals.

Additionally, back-to-back guests on the May 11 sailing were supposedly told that their hotel stays would be fully covered until the next voyage.

"Please know how much we appreciate your patience and understanding. Your safety and comfort as our guests are always our highest priority, and every decision has been made with you in mind," the letter reads.

It continues, "Our team is fully committed to supporting you and making this transition as smooth as possible under the circumstances."

"If your flight is scheduled for later this week, we recommend contacting your airline or travel provider to explore earlier travel options."

Disney Adventure is the line's newest (and biggest) ship, measuring around 208,000 gross tons. She launched in March 2026 and can accommodate over 6,000 passengers.

The Disney Adventure cruise ship has seen a mixed reception since its launch, with excitement over its size and amenities overcast by operational issues and quality concerns.

Part of the reason is that this ship was not built specifically for Disney Cruise Line. Rather, she was initially ordered by Genting Hong Kong. However, the cruise line then transferred the ship to Dream Cruises, with a launch date of sometime in 2020.

The pandemic indefinitely halted construction, with Genting Hong Kong filing for bankruptcy in January 2022. Consequently, the partially completed hull was sold to Disney Cruise Line for around €40 million.

Because Disney was less involved in the original design and early construction phase, there's a lot about the vessel that doesn't come close to its normal standards.

For starters, the staterooms lack the same magical touches as ships like Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish. Although they are still as functional as you'd expect for a cruise cabin, they feel far more utilitarian compared to other ships in the Disney fleet.

"Here’s what the room looks like when all 4 beds are down for the evening. Very little floor space. I can’t imagine having 4 people in here," Theme Park Express, an X user, posted.

He later added that Disney skimped out on the stateroom's mattress situation, claiming that they just put a cover and a thin pad on the couch cushion.

Other complaints about the new Disney cruise ship include poorly trained crew members, an inconsistent operating schedule for the Iron Cycle roller coaster, and long lines for the buffet.
