An elderly cruise passenger died after falling off the pier at Carnival's Celebration Key in The Bahamas.
The tragic accident happened around noon on Saturday, May 9, 2026, according to the Nassau Guardian, when the 88-year-old passenger reportedly lost control of her scooter.
Local investigators suspect that the unidentified victim hit her head on the hull of the Carnival Celebration ship before plunging into the water.
Cruise line employees jumped into action to rescue the guest, and she was retrieved from the water and transported to the ship's medical center. Unfortunately, she was later pronounced dead by a local physician.
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the incident to another media outlet, saying, "Carnival confirmed that a female guest using a mobility scooter drove off the pier at Celebration Key and fell into the water while Carnival Celebration was in port on May 9."
"Carnival teams responded, successfully retrieving her from the water. Despite resuscitation efforts, she did not survive. The deceased was taken by the Royal Bahamian Police Department and the coroner’s office. Our thoughts are with her family."
The incident happened on the last day of a seven-night Caribbean cruise from Miami, Florida, according to Cruise Mapper.
Before docking at Celebration Key, the 183,521 gross-ton Carnival Celebration visited Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos; Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; and Nassau, Bahamas.
Celebration Key is Carnival's new private resort destination in The Bahamas. It opened in July 2025 and features expansive beaches, pools, shopping areas, water slides, restaurants, an upscale adult-only club, and more — exclusively for Carnival cruise passengers.
"Very sad for the passenger and family"
Cruisers took to social media to share their firsthand accounts of witnessing the tragedy.
"Earlier today, just before noon or so, our captain called a man overboard and two people had fallen off the pier between our boat and the pier. From what I understand, one person is okay, but the other had CPR performed on them and actually passed away," wrote one Redditor.
Someone else added, "I definitely saw CPR and one person being covered and wheeled away on a stretcher from the top deck. Not sure of any other details as the captain’s announcement was pretty vague."
"I just got off that boat today and yes we heard about a death from that tragic event yesterday. We were on the lido deck when we had heard about it over the PA system," commented another guest.
One passenger even snapped a few pictures of the scene from the ship as emergency crews, including a CSI unit, surrounded the pier. The victim's soaked mobility scooter was seen pulled from the ocean and on the dock as well.
Not the first death at Celebration Key
Despite being open for less than one year, this is not the first death at Carnival's $600 million private Bahamian destination.
On August 15, two guests died in unrelated accidents. The Royal Bahamas Police Force issued a public statement about the incidents, stating that both were accidental drownings that happened in the ocean and the destination's pool:
"Shortly before noon, police were alerted to an incident at Celebration Key. Officers on duty at that location responded and discovered an unresponsive 79-year-old male on board a commercial vessel."
According to the initial report, the passenger became unresponsive while snorkeling at the beach. Although CPR was administered, it was unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
Continuing on, the statement says, "Shortly after 2:30 p.m., after being alerted, officers discovered an unresponsive 74-year-old female... The initial report suggests that the female became unresponsive while swimming in a pool."
She, too, was then pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
