I’ve been on 9 Norwegian Cruise Line sailings: here are my favorite ships and itineraries

Norwegian Cruise Line

In the last two and a half years, I have sailed on nine different Norwegian Cruise Line ships and itineraries. From Europe to Alaska, the Caribbean, and more, I’ve had the joy of seeing much of what Norwegian has to offer its passengers.

With so many different sailings under my belt, you might wonder: which ones are my favorites? Which ships stand out? And which itineraries do I think are the best?

Over the course of my nine sailings, I’ve sailed on ships from every one of Norwegian’s classes. Each of these experiences has taught me a lot about Norwegian Cruise Line as a brand, and I’ve come to appreciate the variety and creativity that each ship offers. Some ships I’ve absolutely loved, others have been a bit of a mixed bag, and some have downright surprised me.

While I’ve sailed on a diverse range of ships, including the newest and the oldest in the fleet, I’ve narrowed down a few favorites that stand out for various reasons—whether it’s for their amenities, food, entertainment, or itineraries.

My favorite ships

Choosing a favorite ship is not a one-size-fits-all decision. Each has its own unique layout, amenities, dining options, and entertainment features that appeal to different cruisers. I consider a range of factors when picking my favorites, including the overall atmosphere, food offerings, stateroom comfort, entertainment options, and the ship’s itinerary.

Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss

Image
NCL encore

Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss are both part of the Breakaway Plus Class, which are some of the largest ships in the fleet, with nearly 4,000 guests onboard. Being among the newest ships, they bring plenty of modern amenities and fantastic features that cater to a wide range of cruisers.

One of my favorite things about these ships is The Waterfront, a wrap-around outdoor deck that offers breathtaking ocean views and ample seating for relaxing or dining al fresco. There’s something magical about strolling along this deck as the sun sets, taking in the fresh sea air while you sip a cocktail or enjoy a meal outdoors. It’s a feature that I think every cruise ship should have.

Another highlight of these ships is the Norwegian Speedway, the first go-kart track at sea. This experience is unique to Norwegian, and while it comes with an additional cost of $15 per ride session, it’s absolutely worth trying at least once. There are single and double-rider karts, which make it accessible for families with kids (ages 8+). The thrill of racing at sea is something you won’t find on any other cruise line.

These two ships also offer exceptional entertainment, with shows like Kinky Boots on the Encore and Jersey Boys on the Bliss. The variety of specialty dining options, from steak and sushi to tapas and Italian, makes dining onboard a true highlight as well.

If you’re someone who enjoys large, modern ships with plenty of activities, I highly recommend the Norwegian Encore or Norwegian Bliss. The mix of entertainment, dining, and relaxation spaces is top-tier, and they’re perfect for families, couples, and solo travelers alike.

Norwegian Star

NCL star

Norwegian Star is one of the oldest ships in the fleet, but it holds a special place in my heart. I’ll admit, at first, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a ship that debuted in 2001, but this ship won me over.

We initially chose Norwegian Star for its itinerary, which included some amazing stops in Europe, but it didn’t take long for the ship itself to impress me.

Despite its age, Star offers a lot of great complimentary dining options, including a fantastic Asian restaurant, and the Spice H2O area at the back of the ship, which is perfect for lounging in a quieter space away from the bustling pool deck.

Elevators

One of the best things about the Norwegian Star is its entertainment. The variety acts and live music options were surprisingly good, and we found ourselves frequently enjoying the lounges in the evening after a full day of exploring.

I also appreciate that Norwegian Star is often used on budget-friendly itineraries, which makes it a great option for travelers who want to cruise without breaking the bank. For a ship over 20 years old, it’s managed to hold up well, offering an enjoyable and comfortable cruise experience.

Norwegian Jewel

If you’re considering an Alaskan cruise, look no further than Norwegian Jewel.

This ship has been a key player in Norwegian’s Alaska cruises, and it’s easy to see why. During the summer months, Norwegian Jewel offers stunning 7- and 9-night itineraries through some of Alaska’s most beautiful ports, including Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway.

Though Jewel was built in 2005, it underwent a major refurbishment in 2022, which gave the ship’s staterooms a much-needed upgrade. Now, they’re modern, clean, and surprisingly luxurious for a ship of its age. Many of the stateroom amenities onboard feel just as current as those on newer ships like Norwegian Bliss or Encore.

One thing I love about Norwegian Jewel is how it blends the charm of older ships with modern comforts. You’ll find classic Norwegian Cruise Line features, like the Great Outdoors seating area and the complimentary Asian restaurant, alongside updated venues and staterooms. The combination of old and new works really well here.

For those seeking an adventurous, scenic cruise experience in Alaska, Norwegian Jewel is an excellent choice. The ship’s layout and intimate atmosphere make it easy to navigate, and the smaller guest capacity (about 2,300 passengers) creates a more personal, less crowded experience.

Norwegian Viva

NCL Viva

As Norwegian’s newest ship, Norwegian Viva brings something completely different to the table.

Part of the Prima Class, it’s designed with wide-open spaces, modern Scandinavian-inspired décor, and innovative new features that set it apart from the rest of the fleet.

The Indulge Food Hall is a standout venue onboard the Viva, offering a variety of international cuisines in a fast-casual setting. Guests can order dishes from various stations using a tablet, and the food is delivered right to your table. It’s one of my favorite places to eat onboard, and the Indian food, in particular, is excellent!

Another amazing feature is the Ocean Boulevard, a wrap-around outdoor space that houses two smaller pools, several bars, and comfortable seating areas perfect for soaking in the ocean views. The design of the Viva really embraces the outdoors, with large windows, open spaces, and plenty of room to breathe.

The Norwegian Viva also has the largest go-kart track at sea, and its Galaxy Pavilion is an impressive virtual reality playground for guests of all ages. The additional pool areas, located along the Ocean Boulevard of the ship, offer excellent places to unwind if you’re looking for a spot to relax and socialize with friends.

While the Viva has a lot to offer, its main pool area is noticeably smaller compared to other ships, which might be a drawback for some passengers. However, with so many other outdoor areas and smaller pools available, you can easily find a place to cool off.

Where I've sailed

Image

While the ships themselves are an essential part of the cruising experience, the itinerary is just as important. One of the best things about cruising is the ability to see multiple destinations without the hassle of unpacking and repacking. Whether you’re exploring the Mediterranean or the icy wilderness of Alaska, Norwegian offers a wide range of itineraries for travelers of all interests.

In my time cruising with Norwegian, I’ve explored the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and Bahamas, Alaska, the British Isles, the Pacific Coast of the U.S., and even embarked on solo adventures and a transatlantic crossing and more.

Families

Image
NCL GSC

For families, I recommend the Caribbean or Alaska. Both options are relatively easy to navigate, offer family-friendly activities, and have plenty of shore excursions to choose from.

Caribbean cruises are great for families because of the warm weather, beautiful beaches, and exciting port stops like Cozumel, Mexico, or St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Norwegian ships that sail these itineraries, such as the Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Encore, offer plenty of activities for kids and teens, including water slides, go-kart tracks, and family-friendly entertainment.

Alaska is another fantastic choice for families, especially those who want a more educational and adventurous experience. From whale-watching tours to exploring glaciers, an Alaskan cruise offers a perfect mix of outdoor adventure and cultural experiences. Norwegian Jewel is a great ship for this itinerary, providing an intimate experience that brings you closer to nature.

Couples

Image
NCLSun

For couples looking for a romantic getaway, the Mediterranean is my top recommendation. The combination of historic cities, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine makes this itinerary perfect for couples who want a mix of relaxation and cultural exploration.

Sailing on ships like the Norwegian Epic or Norwegian Jade, you can visit iconic cities like Rome, Barcelona, and Florence, all while enjoying leisurely days at sea. The Mediterranean is full of charm, whether you're exploring ancient ruins, enjoying wine tastings in the countryside, or taking romantic strolls through narrow, cobblestone streets.

I visited the Mediterranean, specifically Málaga, Spain, and Lisbon, Portugal onboard Norwegian Sun. While I sailed on this itinerary with a friend, I have also cruised with Viking Cruises to the Mediterranean, and I think it makes for the perfect couples vacation!

Image
NCL Sun

The Mediterranean also offers some incredible shoulder-season deals, which makes it an appealing option for couples looking for a romantic escape without breaking the bank. Plus, sailing in the Mediterranean during the shoulder season (late spring or early fall) means fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and a more relaxed pace overall, which is perfect for couples looking to enjoy each other’s company and the beautiful surroundings.

One of my favorite experiences on a Mediterranean itinerary is exploring all the old towns and fascinating cities with your loved ones. There is just something so romantic about this region of the world! For my husband and I's honeymoon, we went on a winter-time Mediterranean cruise, and it was wonderful.

Additionally, the onboard experiences with Norwegian Cruise Line cater well to couples, with adult-only spaces such as The Vibe Beach Club and Spice H2O, where you can sip cocktails in a more peaceful, laid-back atmosphere. Specialty restaurants like Le Bistro and Cagney's Steakhouse offer a romantic, intimate setting for a quiet dinner with your partner.

Adventure seekers

Image

For those who crave adventure, I highly recommend Norwegian’s itineraries sailing around the British Isles. From the rugged cliffs of Ireland to the mystical landscapes of Scotland, this region offers a stunning variety of scenery sure to ignite a sense of wonder and exploration.

Sailing through the British Isles was one of the most captivating experiences I’ve ever had in all of my travels. We chose this itinerary to explore something entirely different from the usual tropical Caribbean or Mediterranean cruises, and the British Isles did not disappoint.

Waking up to rolling green hills, ancient castles perched on cliffs, and quaint villages nestled along the coast was a refreshing departure from the typical cruise experience.

Image

The shore excursions on this itinerary are perfect for adventure seekers.

Whether ihiking in the Scottish Highlands, exploring the dramatic Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, or visiting the mysterious Stonehenge, there’s no shortage of thrilling activities. Yet, what truly stands out is the rich history and untouched beauty of these landscapes.

On some days, it felt like we were discovering hidden gems far removed from the usual tourist routes. Because we chose to sail during the autumn season, we encountered the occasional rough seas. Because of this, our itinerary had to be changed, and we had an overnight in Cobh, Ireland. On one of our days docked in Cobh, we chose to take a local taxi to the Irish seaside town of Kinsale. We immediately fell in love with this off-the-beaten-path town!

Image
NCL star

I sailed this itinerary aboard Norwegian Star, a ship that’s well-suited for navigating the sometimes narrow ports of call in the British Isles due to its smaller size than some of the larger Norwegian ships.

One of the highlights was visiting the Orkney Islands, where dramatic coastal cliffs and ancient stone circles left a lasting impression that I will always remember. Standing on the deck, with the wind in my face and the stunning landscapes unfolding before me, I knew this was an adventure I’d never forget!

For cruisers who love history and nature, the British Isles offer a perfect mix of adventure and tranquility, providing an intimate connection with these awe-inspiring locations.

Relaxation

Image

When it comes to pure relaxation, nothing compares to a Transatlantic cruise. This itinerary offers the perfect balance of tranquil sea days and captivating stops at unique ports, providing ample time to unwind and disconnect from the hustle of everyday life.

Transatlantic cruises typically begin in vibrant European cities like Barcelona or Rome before embarking on a serene ocean crossing, or in the United States in cities such as New York, Boston, Orlando, or Miami.

While the journey often includes stops at fascinating destinations like Spain or Italy, what I loved most about this itinerary was the extended time at sea. There’s something incredibly peaceful about watching the endless horizon, with no distractions other than the gentle rhythm of the ocean.

Image
ncl

I sailed a 12-night transatlantic sailing onboard Norwegian Epic that left Port Canaveral near Orlando, Florida, and ended near Rome.

What made this itinerary truly special was the long, unhurried days at sea. It’s rare to find an experience that allows for such deep relaxation—whether curled up with a book on the sun deck or simply watching the sunset over the Atlantic.

And when you do arrive at port, each destination feels like an exciting new chapter in your journey, with opportunities to explore historic cities or pristine coastal towns.

Image
ncl

If your goal is to relax and reset, a transatlantic cruise should be at the top of your list.

The slower pace and serene ocean setting make it an ideal choice for those looking to unwind while still discovering new corners of the world. With no stress or worry about cramming as much as possible into each port day on a port-intensive itinerary, a transatlantic cruise offers the perfect opportunity to truly relax and explore your Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Something different

Image
ncl

For cruise passengers craving a change of pace, I highly recommend Norwegian's Atlantic Canada itinerary.

On a recent cruise aboard Norwegian Jade, I sailed to the captivating shores of Atlantic Canada—a region I had never explored before. Having only visited the west coast of Canada in the past, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But by the end of the trip, I found myself utterly enchanted by this corner of the world.

With stops in charming destinations like Halifax, Sydney, Corner Brook, and Charlottetown, each day felt like a new discovery. There’s something special about this itinerary, especially during the autumn months when the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of the changing leaves create an atmosphere that feels straight out of a postcard.

Image
ncl

Atlantic Canada has a little something for everyone. Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or just someone who appreciates beautiful, less-traveled destinations, you’ll find plenty to explore.

And with its close proximity to the United States, this itinerary is easy to reach and perfect for those who have already sailed the more popular routes and are now looking for something refreshingly different.

Norwegian Cruise Line tips

Image
ncl

With so many ships and itineraries to choose from, planning a Norwegian vacation can feel overwhelming. But that’s also what makes Norwegian such a great cruise line—they truly have something for everyone!

Here are a few tips to help you choose the right Norwegian Cruise Line ship and itinerary for your next adventure:

Consider the ship's size

Image
ncl

If you prefer a more intimate cruising experience with fewer passengers, opt for a mid-size or smaller ship like Norwegian Jewel or Norwegian Jade. These ships offer a more relaxed atmosphere and fewer crowds, which can be especially nice on scenic itineraries like Alaska or the Norwegian Fjords.

On the other hand, if you want a cruise with lots of amenities and activities, consider one of the newer, larger ships like the Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Viva, or Norwegian Bliss. These ships are packed with entertainment, dining options, and onboard activities that cater to families and active cruisers looking for lots to do onboard.

Itinerary

Are you looking for a sun-soaked beach vacation, or do you want to explore new cities and immerse yourself in different cultures? The Caribbean is perfect for those who want to spend their days swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing, while itineraries such as the Mediterranean and Northern Europe offer a mix of historic sightseeing and coastal relaxation.

If you’re more interested in nature and adventure, consider Alaska or the Norwegian Fjords. These itineraries offer some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world, with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and wildlife viewing.

Take interests into consideration

Image

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a variety of itineraries to suit every traveler’s style and preferences.

Whether you’re seeking a relaxing beach escape, a cultural exploration, or an adventurous journey, there’s a cruise to match your taste. With ships that cater to solo travelers, couples, families, and groups, Norwegian makes it easy to find an itinerary that’s perfect for you.

In addition to their diverse offerings, Norwegian frequently runs promotions to make cruising even more accessible. Look out for deals like buy-one-get-one airfare, special discounts for military members, and exclusive offers for first responders. These promotions add even more value to an already flexible and enjoyable cruising experience, allowing more people to explore the world at sea while sticking to a budget.

Shore excursions

Image
ncl

Shore excursions can make or break your cruise experience, so take the time to research the options available at each port of call before your cruise when possible.

Norwegian offers a wide range of excursions, from adventurous activities like zip-lining and scuba diving to more laid-back options like wine tastings and city tours. Booking a few key excursions can elevate your cruise from good to great.

Shore excursions can become rather expensive. For this reason, I recommend picking out a couple must-do excursions and then deciding if you can explore some of the other ports of call on your own.

No matter what type of vacation you’re looking for—whether it’s adventure, relaxation, culture, or family fun—there’s a Norwegian ship and itinerary that’s perfect for you.
