Guide to Norwegian Cruise Line

NCL Escape

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has been a major player within the industry for over 54 years, founded in 1966. Renowned for its freestyle cruising, Norwegian’s success is continuing to grow with the addition of the Prima Class, with the newest ship set to launch in April 2026.

Norwegian is celebrated for its "Freestyle" cruising concept, which offers guests great flexibility when planning their trips and vacations, such as no set dining times or locations. Norwegian also has an impressively large fleet, complete with modern and innovative amenities for guests to enjoy.

With the debut of Norwegian Luna in 2026, Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet will consist of 21 ships — until Norwegian Sky departs.

NCL-Aqua-Inside-Cabin

There are seven types of Norwegian cabins offered on its fleet.

The most expensive are within The Haven, NCL’s “ship-within-a-ship” concept. Not only are these suites the largest and most opulent onboard, but they come with a slew of perks like a 24-hour butler, private restaurant, and more.

Norwegian also offers spacious and luxurious suites and penthouses, club balcony suites, standard balconies, ocean-view rooms, interior cabins, and studios for solo travelers.

Studio staterooms are unique in that they also offer single cruisers access to the dedicated Studio Lounge, where you can mingle with other passengers or have a quiet space to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Norwegian food

NCL-Aqua-Dining-Room-Menu

Norwegian’s dining program is unlike any other in the industry. Whereas lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival offer traditional dining, where you can eat at the same time each night with the same wait staff, Norwegian’s “Freestyle” mantra is more flexible.

Moreover, there are no dress codes, so Norwegian cruisers don’t have to worry about packing for formal nights.

Rather than worrying about set dining times or reservations, guests are free to wander into any of the complimentary dining rooms whenever hunger strikes.

Each night, the two dining rooms feature a new menu to give guests a new culinary experience. The rotating menus have everything from globally inspired dishes like Pad Thai to classic comfort foods.

Besides the dining rooms, Norwegian offers all-you-can-eat buffets, a complimentary 24-hour restaurant, a food hall (on its newer ships), and more.

There are also impressive specialty options for those who want a more intimate dining experience. The restaurants vary based on the ship, but you can generally expect an upscale steakhouse, French bistro, and Italian eatery.

They also have another private destination in Belize called Harvest Caye. Part of The Norwegian Edge initiative, Harvest Caye was designed to bring higher standards to the high seas and was developed in partnership with the Belizean government and local inhabitants own the businesses and work onsite to help contribute to the local economy.

Shore Excursions

Norwegian Cruise Line has extensive offers of shore excursions available to guests on every sailing. Shore excursions are a fantastic way to explore and experience the various destinations and ports of call on a cruise sailing.

Norwegian Cruise Line categorizes their shore excursions by type of activity. The four categories are: adventure, family, featured, and sightseeing. These different categories help ensure that there is a shore excursion that will appeal to all guests’ different needs and desires.

Shore excursions are an additional cost, and they tend to start at around $100 per person with Norwegian Cruise Line. Because of the additional cost, it can be helpful for NCL guests to plan out well ahead of time which shore excursions they wish to participate in, so that they can budget properly.

Image
NCL excursion

Shore excursions also range in the amount of time that they last at a destination. Some shore excursions are only an hour or two, while others last all day at around 9 hours.

Norwegian Cruise Line helps guests understand how strenuous a shore excursion may be by assigning each excursion with an “Activity Level”. These levels range from 1 to 3. An activity with a score of 1 means the following, “tours with this activity level involve walking over relatively level terrain, possibly some cobblestone, gravel, or a few steps. Comfortable shoes recommended."

An excursion with a score of 2 means the following, “tours with this activity level involve a considerable amount of physical activity. Not recommended for guests with physical limitations.” An excursion with a score of 3 means the following, “tours with this activity level involve physical exertion for extended periods of time. Recommended only for physically fit and adventurous travelers.”

It is highly recommended that guests take into consideration the cost, duration, and activity level of shore excursions during their cruise planning process.
