Cruise line warns passengers of flight delays because of US attack on Venezuela

Virgin Voyages San Juan Cancel

Cruise passengers traveling through the Caribbean are facing widespread flight disruptions on January 3, 2026, after the U.S. military carried out a large-scale operation in Venezuela overnight.

Unfortunately, cruisers are now dealing with airspace closures across parts of the region, resulting in cancelled and diverted flights.

As airline disruptions spread across the Caribbean, Virgin Voyages issued an urgent travel advisory to passengers disembarking in San Juan. The cruise line warned guests that flights operated by U.S. airlines were being affected by airspace closures in the Caribbean.

In an email sent to guests, Virgin Voyages said local port authorities had advised that airspace over Puerto Rico was temporarily closed to U.S. airlines. The closure has directly impacted flights arriving in and departing from San Juan, affecting cruise passengers attempting to return home or reach the port for upcoming sailings.

“Local port authorities have advised that the airspace over Puerto Rico is temporarily closed for all U.S. airlines due to military activity in Venezuela,” Virgin Voyages said in the email. “This is impacting flights operated by U.S. airlines flying into and out of San Juan.”

The cruise line instructed all travelers to proceed to the airport as scheduled and to check in directly with their airline for the most current flight information. In addition, Virgin Voyages noted that airlines are best positioned to manage rebooking options and must account for all passengers before confirming next steps.

Despite the flight disruptions, the cruise line confirmed that U.S. Customs and Border Protection requirements remain in effect and that disembarkation timelines would not change. All passengers were required to leave the ship by 10:30 a.m. as originally scheduled.

Our crew remains available to assist with any immediate questions or concerns. This is a developing situation. Please check your email or this page regularly for the most current information," said the cruise line.

Valiant Lady is scheduled to sail on a 7-night Aruban Sights sailing departing on January 3, 2026 from San Juan. The original itinerary is meant to visit Aruba, Curacao, Antigua, and St. Maarten. At this time, updates to the itinerary have not been announced. However, Aruba and Curacao’s close proximity to Venezuela could lead to itinerary adjustments for safety.

Virgin Voyages also addressed passengers scheduled to embark on upcoming sailings from San Juan, acknowledging that some travelers may be unable to reach the ship due to canceled flights. The cruise line said any guest who misses embarkation because of the airspace closures will receive a full future voyage credit.

“We understand that flight disruptions may prevent some Sailors from joining us for our next departure from San Juan. Any Sailor unable to embark due to this situation will receive a full voyage credit to use on a future Virgin Voyages sailing,” stated the cruise line.

Moreover, the communication said, “Virgin Voyages is actively assessing all options and working through every possible scenario to support our Sailors during this unprecedented disruption. We understand the frustration this situation causes, particularly following what we hope was an exceptional voyage.”

Several U.S. airlines began canceling Caribbean flights early Saturday in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration airspace restrictions as a result of the escalating situation. The closures have impacted flights to and from multiple Caribbean destinations, which is creating challenges for cruise passengers attempting to disembark or reach embarkation ports.

For example, Delta Air Lines confirmed that certain flights would be cancelled beginning Saturday morning. The airline has issued a travel waiver for impacted customers traveling between January 3, 2026 and January 6, 2026.

The airline said the cancellations were directly related to FAA airspace closures in the Caribbean and emphasized that safety remains its top priority.

According to Delta Air Lines, impacted airports include the following: Antigua (ANU), Aruba (AUA), Barbados (BGI), Bonaire (BON), Curaçao (CUR), Grenada (GND), San Juan (SJU), St. Kitts (SKB), St. Thomas (STT), St. Croix (STX), St. Vincent (SVD), St. Maarten (SXM), and St. Lucia (UVF).

Currently, impacted passengers are being notified through the Fly Delta app and are encouraged to monitor flight status and rebooking options directly with the airline.

Other U.S. carriers are also closely monitoring the situation, and additional cancellations across the Caribbean remain possible as military operations continue.

On January 3, 2026, the United States carried out a large-scale military operation in Venezuela, resulting in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, according to statements from the U.S President. In addition, the U.S. military coordinated strikes on military and strategic infrastructure near the Venezuelan capital.

Explosions were reported in and around Caracas in the early hours of Saturday, January 3, 2026. Strikes were confirmed at La Carlota air base, Port La Guaira, and Higuerote Airport. The operation unfolded after months of escalating tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela.

According to BBC News, U.S. officials said the action was conducted to execute an arrest warrant tied to long-standing U.S. indictments against Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were charged in New York with narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, and weapons-related offenses.

The U.S officials also confirmed that Maduro and Flores were captured during a U.S. special forces operation and transported out of Venezuela by the U.S. military.

The military action triggered immediate regional security responses, including temporary airspace closures affecting parts of the Caribbean. U.S. aviation authorities restricted flight paths as a precaution, leading to widespread flight cancellations and travel disruptions across the region.
