What splurges are worth paying extra for on your Disney cruise and which ones should you skip?

Disney offers lots to do onboard that is included with your cruise fare, such as soft drinks, entertainment, character meets and more.  But there are also lots of extras that will cost more if you elect to buy them.

Here is a list of five things that are totally worth the money, and five things you should skip.

Disney Cruise Line cancels cruises through January 31, 2021

Update, 12/7/2020: Disney Cruise Line has now canceled all departures through February 28, 2021. Potential restart dates for each ship are: Disney Fantasy, March 6; Disney Dream, March 2; Disney Magic, March 2; Disney Wonder, March 13.

 

Disney Cruise Line announced that it has cancelled all of its cruises through the end of January 2021.

All scheduled cruises through January 31, 2021 are now cancelled on Disney Cruise Line.

CDC issues strongest warning ever to avoid going on a cruise ship

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced its strongest warning yet about going on a cruise ship.

The Federal agency issued a Level 4 warning to avoid ocean and river cruises anywhere in the world due to a "very high" risk.

The warning was raised from Level 3 to Level 4, which is the highest level of warning at its disposal.  In addition, the CDC warned against anyone that has an increased risk of severe illness to avoid travel on cruise ships.

Disney Cruise Line extends ability to cancel a cruise without penalty

Disney Cruise Line announced on Friday it would extend its Cruise Date Flexibility Offer, which allows cruisers to cancel or change their cruise without a fee.

The Cruise Date Flexibility Offer is now valid on all existing and new reservations made by December 31, 2020 and applies to all cruises on or before May 31, 2021.

Under the policy, guests can change their sail date up to 15 days before their cruise is set to depart without a change fee.

After changing the cruise date under the CDFO, you cannot change it back to the original sail date.

Royal Caribbean gets over 100,000 people to volunteer for a test cruise

Royal Caribbean has plenty of people to choose from when it begins its test cruises, because over 100,000 people have volunteered.

Michael Bayley, Royal Caribbean International President and CEO, shared on his Facebook page on Sunday the staggering amount of people who would love to go on a free cruise to help test out the new health protocols.

"And just like that…100,000 people have volunteered. We can’t wait to start this next phase with you all!" Michael Bayley wrote on Facebook.

Princess Cruises cancels all cruises through March 31, 2021

Princess Cruises announced a major new batch of cancelled cruises that delay the cruise line's ability to restart through at least the first quarter of 2021.

All Princess Cruise sailings are cancelled through March 31, 2021.

In addition, any cruise longer than 7-nights is cancelled through November 1, 2021. Cruises departing in and out of Japan through June 25, 2021 are also cancelled.

Princess had earlier extended its pause in operations for cruises departing from Australia and New Zealand through May 31, 2021.

Cruise industry added $55.5 billion to U.S. economy last year

Over eight months of no cruises in North America means the U.S. economy was denied billions of dollars.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announced that the cruise industry pumped over $55.5 billion in economic activity in the United States in 2019, a 5.3% increase from 2018. 

The data is part of a newly released 2019 U.S. Economic Impact Analysis, which serves to quantify the important role cruise lines play in contributing to the U.S. economy.

Royal Caribbean announces new summer 2022 cruises you can now book

Royal Caribbean has released new summer summer 2022 cruises that boast cruises across six ships  from Florida, Texas and New York, which include new itineraries and evening stays.

The new summer 2022 lineup is available to book immediately and is for itineraries 5 nights or longer. The cruise line will announce its remaining Caribbean summer 2022 deployment early next year.

Carnival cancels January 2021 cruises, plus select cruises in February and March

Carnival Cruise Line announced on Wednesday another round of cancellations that extend as far into 2021 as March.

In order to take the necessary time to prepare the cruise line for the needs of the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control (CDC) Framework for Resuming Cruise Ship Operations Order, more cruises need to be cancelled.

The new cancellations include:

SeaDream cancels 2020 cruises after first Caribbean sailing ends due to COVID

After its first Caribbean sailing ended sooner than expected due to a few COVID-19 cases onboard, SeaDream announced it will cancel the remainder of its 2020 cruises.

The SeaDream I, which is a luxury yacht, departed last week with half the usual capacity, but had to cut the cruise short due to 7 guests and 2 crew members testing positive for the virus.

As a result, SeaDream has cancelled sailings for the remainder of 2020.
