Royal Caribbean talks of possibly more cancellations, new ship delays and a look at booking numbers

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd posted an update today, where it provided a glimpse at the business impact of the current global health crisis.

All of its cruises are cancelled through at least June 11, 2020, and it said "continued disruptions to travel and port operations in various regions may result in further suspensions."

Interestingly, booking volumes are not as bad as some thought. Royal Caribbean started 2020 in a strong booked position and at higher prices on a prior year comparable basis.

Royal Caribbean extends ability to cancel cruises

Royal Caribbean announced it has expanded its popular "Cruise with Confidence" program that allows guests to cancel cruises up to 48 hours before sailing.

In an effort to provide peace of mind to cruisers, new and existing bookings created by August 1, 2020 have the flexibility to cancel their cruise up to 48 hours prior to sailing and receive a full credit of the cruise fare for a future cruise through April 2022. 

In addition, Royal Caribbean has also enhanced “Cruise with Confidence” with new rebooking options. 

Royal Caribbean cancels an additional 30 days of cruises due to COVID-19

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced today all of its brands will extend their voluntary suspension of cruises for an additional 30 days because of the coronavirus pandemic.

All sailings are cancelled through May 11, 2020. Alaska, Canada and New England sailings are cancelled through June 30, 2020 due to port closures.

This affects Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara and Silversea Cruises.

Royal Caribbean Cruises takes $2 billion financing loan

Royal Caribbean Cruises on Monday announced it has received a $2.2 billion revolving credit line to help the company's financial situation.

The announcement was made in an effort to bolster its finances in the face of a cruise industry hurt by the coronavirus.

The addition of this load means Royal Caribbean says it has over $3.6 billion on hand in the form of cash deposits and other existing, revolving credit that has not been used.

In addition, the company has committed financing for all of its new ships on order.

Royal Caribbean delays upgrades for two cruise ships due to coronavirus

Royal Caribbean put off its plans to upgrade Allure of the Seas and Explorer of the Seas in Europe, due to the effects coronavirus around the world.

Royal Caribbean Blog first reported that the cruise line confirmed it will not go forward with the scheduled upgrade work on either ship.

There is no new timetable for the work to be done, or any indication if any upcoming sailings will change.

Royal Caribbean moving Quantum of the Seas to offer Alaska cruises in 2021

Royal Caribbean announced it will have two Quantum Class ships offering Alaska cruises in 2021, with Quantum of the Seas homeported in Seattle.

In May 2021, Quantum of the Seas will move to Seattle and offer 7-night sailings that depart on Mondays. Ovation of the Seas will offer similar itineraries on Fridays from Seattle.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced its 30 day suspension of cruises will now encompass its worldwide fleet.

Less than a day after Royal Caribbean announced it would cease operations in the United States for 30 days due to the spread of Coronavirus, the cruise line announced it has decided to suspend the sailings of its fleet globally at midnight tonight.

Beginning at midnight tonight, Royal Caribbean will pausing the fleet’s US sailings for 30 days.

Royal Caribbean's joint venture, Holistica Destinations, announced a $300 million project in Freeport, Bahamas that will open in Winter 2022.

The venture spans two locations including the enhancement and expansion of the port terminal, to be called Harbour Village, and the Lucaya Property, which will be situated at the current Grand Lucayan resort.
